Birmingham has the largest Muslim population of any UK city outside London, and its Muslim life is concentrated in a belt of inner-city wards running east and north from the centre — Sparkbrook, Small Heath, Alum Rock, Saltley and Handsworth. The masjids and maktabs here are numerous and long established, and most Muslim children in the city already attend some form of Quran class.
So the question Birmingham parents ask us is rarely "where do I start?" It is "how do I make sure my child is actually being taught properly?" A maktab class of fifteen to twenty children can only give each one a few minutes of individual recitation. That is not a criticism of the maktab — it is arithmetic. Birmingham’s Muslim community is predominantly of Pakistani and Kashmiri heritage, with the largest Mirpuri population in the country, alongside a significant Bangladeshi community, a long-established Yemeni and Somali presence in Sparkbrook, and African and Arab families across the inner city. Teaching is in English with Urdu support available.
Birmingham weekday slots run 4pm–10pm and weekends 10am–8pm. In practice most families here want the 4:30pm–6pm window, sitting between the end of the school day and the evening maktab. If your child already attends maktab five days a week, the more sensible arrangement is often two or three of our sessions on the days maktab does not run, so the week is not overloaded. We will help you plan that.

The questions we are actually asked by families in Birmingham.
Most of our Birmingham students do. The usual arrangement is two or three sessions a week with us alongside their existing maktab attendance. We use the 1-to-1 time for the part that needs a teacher’s individual ear — correct makharij, Tajweed rules and unpicking mistakes — and your child then arrives at maktab already confident, which tends to change how they are taught there too.
Yes, and they are heavily requested here. Qualified female tutors are available for girls and for adult sisters. You can ask for one when booking, and if the teacher is not the right fit after the first lesson we will change them without any awkwardness.
The largest numbers are in Sparkbrook, Small Heath, Alum Rock, Saltley and Handsworth, with growing numbers in Bordesley Green, Moseley, Kings Heath, Erdington and Sutton Coldfield. Because lessons are online, distance within the city makes no difference at all.
Packages start at £35 a month for two weekend classes and go up to £87 a month for five weekday classes, with £47 and £70 options in between. There is a free 30-minute trial lesson before you commit to anything.
Yes — and adult learners are a much bigger part of what we do than most people assume. A large number of Birmingham adults grew up reading transliteration, or learned surahs by sound without ever learning the script. Starting the Noorani Qaida as an adult is completely normal and most learners are reading directly from the mushaf within a few months.
Yes, and the summer holiday is when Birmingham families make their fastest progress. Without school or maktab in the evening, many move to five sessions a week through August. Packages can be changed month by month with no contract.
