Oldham’s Muslim community is concentrated in a tight ring of wards around the town centre — Coldhurst, Werneth, Alexandra, Medlock Vale and St Mary’s — and it is unusual in its composition. Bangladeshi families, most of them from the Sylhet region, form the largest group and are heavily concentrated in Coldhurst; Pakistani families are concentrated in Werneth and have spread outwards into Alexandra and Medlock Vale in recent decades.

Oldham’s Muslim community is predominantly Bangladeshi, with a large Pakistani population. Sylheti and Bengali are widely spoken at home alongside Urdu and Punjabi. Teaching is delivered in English, with Urdu support available and Bengali-speaking families in mind.
Oldham weekday slots run 4pm–10pm and weekends 10am–8pm. Because the Muslim wards sit within a couple of miles of the town centre, most children here can walk to maktab, and the after-school window fills quickly. For Bengali-speaking families we keep the explanations simple and use the English names for Arabic letters alongside the Arabic, so nothing is lost between what your child hears in class and what you hear them practise at home.
